Tunnel Vision

Lee’s eyes widened and he grinned when he saw what was ahead.  Kerry bit on her
bottom lip and frowned slightly. Even though they could see the end of the tunnel, it
looked very small, a long way off and it was very dark in the middle.

Water dripped down the walls at the entrance and there were puddles inside the tunnel.

Kerry looked at the light sandals on her feet.  She was sorry now that she’d argued
when she was told to wear boots.  Lee, meanwhile, had control of the torch and was
shining the beam on the dripping walls.

Although it was summer it was quite cold in the tunnel.  She rubbed her bare arms to
keep warm.

“This used to be a train tunnel,” said Robert, as they went deeper into it.  “They dug
up the rails and now it’s part of a walkway.”

Kerry was trying to avoid the pools of water that she knew were there, but couldn’t
see.  As they walked, Robert told them the story of the railway line that used to go over
the hills  and how there were many short tunnels. He told of how it was a long, slow
and difficult journey.  These days there is just one long tunnel under the hills and you
are through to the other side in just seven minutes.

It wasn’t til they reached the end that Kerry realised that the only way back to the car
was through the tunnel again.

a.  How was Kerry feeling when they were at the tunnel entrance?  Why did you say
that?
Kerry had felt cold rubbing on her bear arms.
b.  Why was Kerry sorry that she’d argued?
Kerry felt sorry because she was wearing light sandals instead of boots and there was
heaps of water pools in the tunnel.
c.  Why couldn’t Kerry see the pools of water?
Kerry couldn’t see the pools of water because it was dark but she knew that it was there.
d.  Why had the rails been dug up?
They dug the rails up so that it can be about of the walkway.
Reaction question:

Do you think Kerry should have been better prepared for the walk through the
tunnel? Yes so she dont get wet and durty.  Why do you say that?

As Bad as it Gets

The Worst Day of my Life

I don’t believe it.  Last week it was ‘The best day of my life’ and now it’s this.
Why can’t Mr. Thoms have more imagination?

Groaning inwardly, Jaz rolled her eyes, and hoped for inspiration.

OK. Let’s see now. The day I lost my Barbie doll. I was only seven, but I remember
the pain. Or the day I tripped over in front of the whole football team. No, I don’t
want the entire universe to know about that.

The day old Rexie died was pretty awful. I still miss his great big eyes and waggy tail.
He was a lovely dog.

I know! The day Dad lost his job. No that was his worst day. Anyway, he wasn’t out
of work long.

The day I missed out on getting into the national swimming team by three lousy rotten
seconds.  They don’t come much worse than that.

There’s so much to choose from.  My life is full of worst days. This one’s not so good
either.  Now I think of it, I’ve had a terrible life.

Jaz looked over at her friend Elyse, who was adjusting her wheelchair to be closer to
the desk.  Injuries from a car accident last month meant that she would be like this for
another six weeks. She watched as Elyse started writing.  She wrote without pausing,
quickly filling the lines.

Jaz turned to her own desk, lowered her eyes and started writing:  Three days after I
turned seven, I took Crystal, my Barbie doll, out on a picnic...

a.  What kind of inspiration was Jaz hoping for?
Jaz was hoping for a good inspiration about something to wright.
b. What did Jaz mean by ‘Why can’t Mr Thoms have more imagination’?
I think Jaz was saying that ‘Why can’t Mr Thoms have more imagination’ Because they
were doing something boring.
c.  What was Elyse most likely writing about?
Elyse will most likely to be writing about how she got into the wheelchair.
d.  Why do you think that Elyse was able to write  ‘without pausing’?
Elyse was able to wright without pausing because she had a story to wright about what
happened to her.
Reaction question:

Do you think Jaz had had a terrible life?  Why do you say that?
No because the worst thing that has happen to her is losing her barbie doll.

Gym

My only brother was also my twin.  You would think that because we were identical
we would act the same way and like the same things.  He was born forty minutes before
me and would often remind me of the fact. Because I was keen on sport, he would also
rub me up the wrong way by raving on about how sport was boring and a big waste of
time.

“Who, little brother,” he would jeer, “needs to suffer pain unnecessarily?”

When we turned fifteen my parents surprised me with a year’s subscription to the
In-Shape Gym.  Now I was able to join Brant and Ethan each Monday and Wednesday
evening to seriously work out. When they turned up at home to pick me up Josh would
be sprawled out on the couch mindlessly watching cartoons or playing his new
PlayStation.  He would poke fun at us and say that the best way to deal with an
urge to exercise was ’to stay calm and wait until it went away.’

“Just playing sport is bad enough,” he scoffed, “but working out is over the top.
And Tim,” he says, leaning forward and screwing up his nose, “the only reason
you would want to go there would be to attract the girls!”

So it was a surprise, when having decided to go to the gym late one Thursday
afternoon, we saw Josh come out the side door dressed in a tracksuit carrying
a sports bag in his hand.  What’s more, he crossed the road and walked straight up
to a smiling Tammy Aster - the most gorgeous girl at our school.

a.  Why did his brother refer to him as ‘little brother’?
Because he was born 40m after.
He called him his little brother because he was born 40m after.
b.  Do you think the writer was happy with his birthday present?  Why do you say that?
Yes because he got to go to the gym and work out.
Yes because he wanted to work out seriously
c.  What present do you think Tim’s brother got for his fifteenth birthday?
Tim’s brother got the PlayStation and Tim got to go to the gym.
Tim’s brother got a PlayStation because all he wanted to do is sit down and play his game.
d.  Why do you think Josh was at the gym?
I think he was a the gym because he was meeting up with a girl.
Reaction question:

Would you like to be Josh’s brother?  Why do you say that?
No because it will be confusing.

Eeling

Our grandfather told us that rivers and streams around the country had once been so
full of eels they would line up to be caught.

“When we were kids”, he would say with a big grin “the creek was our local fish
shop.” His face then saddened. “Now, there’s pollution and big operations catching
our eels to sell overseas.”

Us kids headed up the road to an old wooden bridge that crossed a slow moving
creek. Dad said there were still a couple of big, mean, sharp-toothed eels hanging
around under it.

Willie got a sack and filled it with the stinking guts from the sheep Dad had killed
that afternoon.

He tied a long rope to the sack. Then he got the old kerosene lamp from the shed.
Mum said that she had learned to read by the light of that old lamp.  He then tied the
lamp to another long rope.

Luke and Tarzan’s job was to lower the sack over the side of the bridge and into the
water. Then they were to dangle the lamp above the surface. The idea was that the guts
would attract the eels.  The light would enable us to see any eels that came around the
bait. Willie, Reg, and I were on the bank. We had the job of spearing them.

And it worked.  That is until Tarzan got so excited he let go of the rope that the lamp
was tied to.

The two good sized eels we got were only half the size of the big eel that came around
just before the lamp was lost.  Because Willie had the idea to use it, we reckoned he
should go in and get it. None of us were keen to get in the water, but in the end we
all helped.  It was not in the best condition when we found it.

It wasn’t surprising that mum put an end to this method of eeling.

a.  Do you think the boys Grandfather had liked to eat eels?  Why do you say that?
Yes he liked it eat eels because they always went down and tried to catch some big
eels and they called it there local fish shop.
b.  What time do you think it was when they went eeling?  Why do you say that?
It was night time when they went feeling because they couldn’t see at night.
c.  Do you think Mum was upset?  Why do you say that?
She was upset because when they found it it was damaged and the lamp helped her
read at night.
d.  What do you think made Tarzan so excited that he dropped the rope?
Tarzan was to excited because there was a eel 4x as big as the ones that they had caught
Reaction question:

Do you think their method of fishing for eels was a good one? Yes and No
Why do you say that? Because they got the right equipment to catch the eels and No
because they damaged there mums lamp.

The Cycling Craze

Uni means one, bi means two and tri means three. A unicycle has one wheel, a seat and
two pedals. A bicycle has two wheels, a seat and two pedals. A tricycle has three
wheels, a seat and two pedals.

Two hundred years ago, when they were first made, the most common bicycles were
called ‘penny-farthings’. They had a large front wheel and a very small back wheel.
The pedals were in the centre of the front wheel and the seat was above it. The rider
was high up in the air. If a rider braked suddenly, the back wheel would rise right up
off the ground. This meant that they could easily be thrown off the seat. They would
have to hang on tight to the handle bars to keep themselves from coming off. It was a
long way to the ground.

To people watching, it was very funny. Some riders, who could manage to keep their
balance on the front wheel, did it just to entertain others.

This led to the making of unicycles. Riders tried to see how far they could travel
balanced on these one-wheeled cycles. They were able to be pedaled backwards as well
as forward. those who were skilled at riding on the front wheel of a penny-farthings
were usually able to ride a unicycle well.

The craze did not last very long. These days unicycles are most often seen in circuses
or shows.

a.  Why can’t we call a unicycle a one wheeled bicycle?
Because a Unicycle only has one wheel and a Bicycle has two wheels.
b.  What made people think of making unicycles?
People thought of making Unicycles for entertainment. X
They got the idea by bullying wheels.
c.  Is it easy to ride a unicycle? Why do you say that?
No because it takes a lot of skills to ried something with one wheel.
d.  Why do you think unicycles were a short lived craze?
Because not that many people know how to ride a Unicycle
Reaction question:

Would you like to ride a penny farthings bicycle? Why do you say that?
No because it is dangers and hard to do.
Create activity:

Fred’s Decision

Fred put down the book he was reading and looked out of the window at the sports car
in his yard.  It was worth a lot of money. He had four more in the big shed. Then he
smiled to himself and nodded. He had decided.

He didn’t tell anyone what he was doing but we all knew he was up to ‘something’.
He spent a lot of time on the phone and even more time making sure that the fence
around his yard was in good order.

Then one day he arrived home with two large geese on the back of a truck. He later
told me that he had learned of how, one night long ago, the ancient city of Rome had
been in danger from invaders. The city’s greece had made such a noise when they heard
the enemy coming, that the sleeping people had woken and fought them off.

Fred’s geese spent their days at the back of the yard, and had the run of the whole
place at night. Fred said they were cheaper than dogs or an ordinary alarm system.
He liked having them around and they were easy to manage. If anyone came near,
the geese would make a lot of noise honking and hissing. Fred always knew if there
was anyone around who shouldn’t be there.

a.  What had Fred decided?
Fred didn't what to tell anyone what he was going to do.

b.  What was in the book that Fred had been reading?
Fred had been reading the book about the ancient city of rome.

c.  What do you think Fred was doing on the phone?
Talking to a farmer to see if he can get some gesse.

d.  Why had Fred brought home the two geese?
Fred brought home the two geese because he want to have a alarm in his house but dog
and ordinary alarm are two expense.

Reaction question:

Do you think Fred’s plan to keep geese was a good one? Why do you say that?
Yes because if someone tries to jump over the fence then the geese will chase after them.
